Spark likes to jump from the sharpest point on the center electrode to the sharpest point on the ground electrode. Therefore it is ideal for the performance of the vehicle that the plug retains the shape for a longer period of time. A standard spark plug has a copper core but but the business end is nickle alloy (as copper is soft with low melting point). Copper being excellent conductor of electricity and heat is used in majority of Spark Plugs.
Nickle alloy however is softer than iridium and hence wear out quickly (losses its shape) which makes it prone to fouling.This leads to decline on vehicle performance. Iridium is a much harder metal with high melting point. Iridium Spark Plugs have higher melting point and have tips with smaller diameter.
